A Christmas Longing

On a street lit with Christmas lights,
A little girl with big blue eyes,
Golden hair and rosy cheeks,
Looks so longingly,
At the house across the street.

With eyes bright,
At the Christmas lights,
The lonely child,
An only child,
A hand on the window,
A hand on her heart,
Hears with tears,
The laughter on the street;
Feels with longing,
The warmth of their smiles;
Sees unseeing,
The gifts opening,
The hugs given,
And the thanks spoken.

The little girl,
Stands at the window,
Her vision blurred,
A hand on her heart,
A hand on the window,
And the cries of laughter,
Turn into cries of longing.
